Studio & Entrepreneurship
This week lecture identified the pros and cons of being an entrepreneur with interviews with John Sinclair, Ustwo, Robin Howie, Fieldwork Facility and Sophie Hawkins, S.Hawkins Co. They all share their insight in the design industry through their experiences in guiding their services and products to an entrepreneur level for success. Create a job, then have a job speaks volumes for motivation is looking for ideas to make new innovative products or services that people are in demand. You need to plan the journey of your ideas from research to delivering the product with the discipline to succeed and be determined to execute your delivery. You have to understand that as a designer you have to be prepaid to step in shoes that you may not have experienced before. This is where you need to wear many hats to control your business from admin to CEO to keep control of what your venture is pursuing. Work ethics plays a big deal in setting up your entrepreneur venture where you need to know your in’s and outs where your passion drives your success. This brings strong values and that is the spine to guide your business towards and maybe a few words that may determine your journey on the road ahead. Success is determined by the discipline and passion that you show at the beginning where you need to start off at a position where you’re in control of what business you are bringing in.
How AirBnB Designs for Trust, Joe Gebbia
Joe Gebbia talks about the success of Airbnb through trust in the communities around the world. This venture was designed on experience’s that people had to gain trust in allowing people into their homes. This was a well design reputation system that brought the whole experience in turning fear into fun. The business model sells itself on trust and its reviews that really make the difference in sharing too little and too much information on greeting with the host. The closure is very important and designing this is down to how the reviews are controlled through word count and sharing information for everyone to read to build on good trust through human connections. It shows the idea designs for overcoming the most deeply rooted stranger-danger bias and this leads to what other social issues can be designed to tackle everyday problems.
Designers make great entrepreneurs, they just don’t know it yet, JESSICA ALTER
This article from Jessica Alter writes about the difference between a designer that just designs and a designer that enjoys the process. This is a great article in defining how designers make a great entrepreneur with the skills they know through processes that can generate great ideas with the power to manager and change rolls as an entrepreneur. It is quoted by Steve Jobs that “Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works.” This is exactly what I’ve learnt in the process of this course which is now becoming the core to developing as a designer, which I feel can venture in an area I may wish to pursue beyond this course when I finish.
Workshop Challenge
The beginning of this weeks challenge brought a great insight in the traits of being a successful entrepreneur and through my research I was able to understand the fundamental values that are needed to succeed. I came across traits that really fits the bill to being an entrepreneur such as passion, work ethics, strong people skills, determination, creativity, competivitness, self-starter, open minded, confidence and disciplined. I believe these are great example on what makes a true success in whatever venture you are looking to pursue.
My idea stems from swearing on the values you may follow in your journey and when your starting on a new business venture you want to keep to values that will keep you focused and disciplined in your field. Without a swear of oath then you may lose your sight in achieving your goals towards success. My infographic / diagram is showing the values I believe makes a successful entrepreneur.
Passion
This is the characteristic that drives us to believe and dream in creating a journey in what you love doing. Passion delivers in ways that makes you on top of what you do to get ahead of the competition but also can create a love, hate situation that makes it personal to you because of the love you have for that drive.
Determination
Determination I feel is the key attribute to an entrepreneur as you have learn from your own mistakes and failure makes you stronger in what you do best. This is an open to a success story that when you’re at your lowest you can go up and beyond your abilities to get things right and become a success in bouncing back. This what makes a real winner and you can see this is sportsman and sportswomen when competing with themselves.
Work Ethics
This is a value I think you need to get right and balance your work and lifestyle in having the best work ethics. Truly when you start your business you will forever know the ins and outs of your company and being the first to attend and the last to leave is a true example to the rest of your team. Work ethics starts from the top to bottom which influence the performance of your employees and yourself in knowing what is happening with your business. You need to be there on hand when needed to help advise and support those when asked upon, which we shouldn’t take anything for granted to maintain a healthy business.
Self Starter
Motivation needs to be driven from every perspective to help with every idea that is pursued. You need to be there from the beginning to the end to get a project completed and know every detail where and when the project is being delivered. Self starter is an opportunity to encourage and motivate a team in finding the best out of the individual that you select for every project.
Disciplined
Successful entrepreneurs always focus their energy on making the business work, and for eliminating the distractions or obstacles to their goals. Creating small steps and achieving the bit by bit helps the focus seem more real than looking at the end goal where you can trail off from what your real focus is to reach.
Open Minded
Allow yourself to be open minded helps to follow and understand others in achieving your goals where you can learn the most. This brings an insight into new potential businesses, people skills, efficiency, and workflow with your business ideas that will help with the focus in achieving your goals.
